Kate Burton, Boyd Gaines, Bobby Steggert and Brenda Wehle are set to star in the world premiere of A. R. Gurney’s The Grand Manner at Lincoln Center Theater's Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater. The play will be directed by Mark Lamos, with off-Broadway previews beginning on June 1 ahead of a June 24 opening.
Inspired by Gurney’s childhood run-in with theater legend Katharine Cornell, nicknamed “The First Lady of the American Stage,” The Grand Manner fondly recalls the actress’ career and pays tribute to the golden days of Broadway. Burton will play Cornell alongside Gaines as her husband, director Guthrie McClintic. Wehle assumes the role of Cornell’s manager, Gert Macy, and Steggert will play Pete, a fictional version of Gurney.
Four-time Tony winner Gaines received the award for Gypsy, She Loves Me, The Heidi Chronicles and Contact, while Burton earned Tony nominations for The Constant Wife, Hedda Gabler and The Elephant Man. Steggert appeared in the Broadway revivals of 110 in the Shade and Ragtime and recently starred in the Broadway-bound Yank! Wehle’s stage credits include Pygmalion and Come Back Little Sheba.
Costume design for The Grand Manner will be by Ann Hould-Ward, with lighting design by Russell H. Champa, set design by John Arnone and original music composed by John Gromada.
